Camaradas, The production of the Jogo Aberto documentary movie will be carried on as an ‘open-source’ endeavour. So, if you can help with transcriptions and/or translations making the project available on your native language, please read this post and get in contact with me. Thanks for all of you who came and made this project possible, to all the students who trusted in our proposal and understood the importance of their role within the art.
I’m also deeply grateful for the support of all guests (Mestre Peixe, C.Mestre Meirelou, Professor Pererê, Olive, and Maguinho), students (who helped me to plan and carry on with the project), and everyone else who showed up and contributed to the achievement of this project.
It was really nice to make new friends; to catch up with the old ones; and to enlarge the network of capoeiras keen to practice and research our art-form within the idea of a ‘Jogo Aberto’. The teacher’s and the student’s roles were complementary during the event, and in this sense one could not be more important then the other. The teacher’s authority did not led to a top-down hierarchical approach, and I believe most students are capable to understand that such approach cannot undermine the respect towards those who dedicate their lives to the study and practice of our art-form.
In a group of nearly 40 people we had 16 nationalities represented and approximately 10 different groups. A few Angola students also came to the camp despite the lack of Angoleiros teaching in our programme of workshops – a rare attitude. They attended diverse classes and engaged within interesting discussions and interviews proving that there are practitioners interested in breaking down barriers without giving up their identities and traditions.
These ‘deviant’ behaviour of some practitioners (from any style) will be soon leading an important change in Capoeira as a tool towards education, social inclusion and diversity tolerance. These people already realised that it’s possible to build unity within diversity – as stated by many philosophers of culture and education. Thank you for participating and congratulations for your open-minded attitude.
One of the best Rodas of the week was led by non-Brazilian instructors and beginners, showing not only that they are gathering a lot of Axé through their Capoeira path but also that they have learnt how to stand for your role as important links within the art’s evolutionary chain. Thanks a lot for the positive feedback in regards to music, and how our activities and discussions made possible a wider glimpse of a much broader cultural context around Capoeira.
During the event we mentioned using the 4CapoeiraThoughts as an ‘open-source’ platform to share resources and ideas, but also as a place to keep the discussions going. So, here are a few topics that I remember discussing with you during the event that will be posted as single articles to facilitate further interaction. Please, remind me of other important issues, in case they have escaped my memory.
- Jogo Aberto Documentary Movie – Once the idea is to share questions in order to bridge practitioners from different backgrounds in their quest to learn Capoeira, we decided to subtitle the bulk of the edited material and post it in the 4CapoeiraThoughts youtube channel after releasing the ‘Jogo Aberto’ movie. Please, let us know if you can help with transcriptions, translations and subtitles.
- Jogo Aberto Narratives – I would appreciate also if you could leave your feedback and/or further thoughts you might have had after the interviews, talks, and the whole camp/filming experience.
- Jogo Aberto Song Book – there will be a post on songs for us to share lyrics, translations and contexts. After gathering enough material we’ll organise a pdf made from all contributions.
- Jogo Aberto Pictures – If you send me selected pictures I’ll upload them in the post, and you guys can comment on it. In case someone volunteer to manage a Flicker account, we can put more pictures available.
Feedbacks about the format of the event, organisation, facilities and the way issues were approached (plus whatever else you might have in mind to say) are very welcomed and can be left here in this post’s thread.
So, please, pick a thread (or suggest a new one) and leave your messages, comments, and feedbacks. Lets share so that we all can learn more from this amazing week long experience! If you want to get in contact with me, please send to my email (4capoeirathoughts_@_gmail_dot_com).
Axé!! E até a próxima!!
