Salve Jorge! The martyrdom of St. Geroge is celebrated on 23 April. In different places in Brazil, due to religious syncretism, St. George also represents the Orixás Oxossi and Ogum. Here is my tribute to São Jorge. The songs’ lyrics were translated and I hope they’ll help you understand more about the Brazilian culture and faith.
The Warrior Saint is also celebrated in many Sambas and Capoeira songs. Here is my tribute to St. George; two beautiful songs about the patron of millions of Brazilians in their battles to survive, celebrating faith and syncretism. Both songs have strong religious references and are embeded in Samba and Ijexá rhythms.
The first song was composed by Jorge Ben Jor, Jorge Vercilo, Jorge Aragão and Jorge Mautner, great Brazilian musicians from different generations. The second was recorded by Zeca Pagodinho in his last album Uma Prova de Amor.
